I’m excited to introduce my newest fine art photograph, Steamboat on Lake Tahoe.
Captured from high above the lake at one of Tahoe’s spectacular waterfalls, this photograph brings together two things that have always fascinated me about this landscape: its extraordinary natural beauty and the history that is woven into it.
Long before the roads that circle Lake Tahoe today, the lake itself was one of the most important transportation routes through the basin. Steamboat service began on Lake Tahoe in 1864, carrying passengers, mail, lumber, and supplies between the communities along its shoreline. By the late 1800s, a fleet of steam-powered vessels traveled these waters, connecting the growing communities and helping transform Tahoe from a remote mountain wilderness into a destination for travelers.
Perhaps the most famous of them all was the S.S. Tahoe, launched in 1896. At nearly 170 feet long, she was the largest and most luxurious vessel ever to navigate the lake, carrying as many as 200 passengers along with freight and mail. For decades, she became known as the “Queen of the Lake,” making daily circuits of Tahoe’s shoreline.
That era eventually disappeared as roads and automobiles made travel around the lake easier. The S.S. Tahoe made her final scheduled runs in the 1930s, bringing an end to an important chapter in Tahoe’s history.
And that is what makes this photograph particularly meaningful to me.
At first glance, Steamboat on Lake Tahoe is simply a photograph of an incredible waterfall cascading over granite, with the vast blue waters of Lake Tahoe stretching into the distance. But look closely and you’ll see a steamboat making its way across the lake.
That vessel transforms the photograph.
It connects the timeless landscape of Tahoe with the people, exploration, travel, and history that have unfolded here for more than a century. The granite, forests, and mountains remain much as they have for generations, while the boat serves as a reminder that this beautiful landscape has always been part of a much larger story.
For me, that is what fine art photography is about—not simply documenting a beautiful place, but capturing a moment that tells a story and gives us a deeper connection to the landscape.
