A beautiful picture of autumn in the Narrows of Zion National Park.

Beneath the towering sandstone cliffs of Zion National Park lies one of nature’s most awe-inspiring creations — the Narrows. In Into the Narrows of Zion, soft reflected light dances across the red canyon walls while the Virgin River flows gently through the scene, weaving a path between golden trees glowing in the autumn sun. The composition draws the viewer’s eye upstream, inviting them to step deeper into the canyon where shadow and light merge into a symphony of color and texture.

Capturing this image required multiple hikes through the Narrows, a journey that is as demanding as it is breathtaking. Wading through the cold waters of the Virgin River, carrying heavy camera equipment, I returned several times — each visit offering a new interplay of light, color, and atmosphere. On one crisp morning, the sun finally aligned just right, striking the canyon wall behind the trees and creating a golden radiance that transformed the entire scene. In that fleeting moment, the canyon came alive — and Into the Narrows of Zion was born.

The Narrows is one of Zion National Park’s most iconic and beloved hikes. Carved by the relentless flow of the Virgin River over millions of years, this deep slot canyon stretches for miles, with walls soaring over a thousand feet high and narrowing to just twenty feet across in some sections. For centuries, it has been a place of wonder and refuge — first for the Indigenous peoples who called the region home, and later for explorers, artists, and nature lovers drawn to its raw beauty.

Today, the Narrows stands as a testament to nature’s artistry and endurance — a place where time slows, water sculpts stone, and light reveals the extraordinary. Through Into the Narrows of Zion, I sought to share that rare and ethereal moment when the heart of the canyon is illuminated in golden perfection.
