“In my many years of driving Highway 395, the Rustic Motel marked the start of adventure. It is located in the town of Olancha, known as ‘The Gateway to the Eastern Sierras.” Before vehicle and phone GPS, this was my reminder that the turn for Death Valley National Park was approaching or that in a few miles is the dirt road turn off for a fun hike into the nearby mountains. It also marked the halfway point for my scenic drives to Yosemite National Park.

This old sign is falling apart and will soon be forgotten as the harsh conditions of the high desert reclaim the landscape. I hope this photograph provides a lasting memory of the historic Rustic Motel, gateway to the Eastern Sierras and adventure.” – Cheyne Walls
