For 20 days, I embarked on an unforgettable journey through some of the most iconic landscapes in the United States: Zion, the Grand Canyon, and Yosemite National Parks. My companion for this odyssey was the new state-of-the-art $60,000 Phase One XC40 IQ4 150MP camera. This expedition wasn’t just a test of its capabilities—it was a testament to how cutting-edge, well built and designed technology can thrive in the raw and often brutal beauty of nature, while rewriting the art form of landscape photography.

Camping became an essential part of this adventure, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the landscapes I was photographing as well as keeping travel times down from shot location to shot location. Each night, I pitched my tent under a canopy of stars if I was lucky, toward the end it was a fight against stormy weather. Often in remote areas where the silence was broken only by the rustling of wind or the distant calls of wildlife. The experience of waking up amidst nature’s grandeur was both humbling and invigorating, providing me with a deeper connection to the scenes I captured. From the icy nights in Zion to the sweltering days at the Grand Canyon and the snow-laden mornings in Yosemite, these campsites became both a refuge and a vantage point for the artistry that unfolded.

Day 1-7: Zion National Park – A Symphony of Rock and Light

Zion welcomed us with its towering sandstone cliffs glowing in hues of red and orange, and not to mention beautiful autumn foliage, marking the upcoming changes in the weather. But this serene landscape belied the challenges ahead. Sub-zero temperatures and high winds turned the canyon into a battleground. Yet, the XC40 IQ4 handled the conditions flawlessly.

The camera’s dynamic range became my greatest ally, as I didn’t need to expose my glove-less hands to the sub-zero temperatures while adding lens filters to help harness highlight and shadow. No filters need while capturing the subtle interplay of light and shadow across the many small slot canyons and Angels Landing. The 15 stops of dynamic range wielded the light allowing for quick and accurate captures. Which was perfect, shooting in such harsh conditions can often introduce issues like condensation or dust, but the XC40’s weather-sealed design kept performance impeccable.

One of my favorite shots from Zion was taken just after sunrise at Angels Landing. As the first rays of sunlight crept over the cliffs, the 150MP resolution of the XC40 IQ4 rendered every detail—from the textured rock faces to the tiny desert shrubs clinging to life on the canyon walls. The clarity and depth of the image were beyond anything I’d ever experienced. Multi-frame averaging mode sent the clouds to motion as I was able to create a 50 second exposure though multiple images captured then composited in camera. This was a game changer as with the high winds I wouldn’t have otherwise been able to capture this image, due to the wind slightly moving the camera during a true long exposure.

Day 8-14: The Grand Canyon – Vastness Personified

Moving to the Grand Canyon, the scale of the landscape was staggering. Capturing such vastness requires not only skill with a bit of luck, but also a camera capable of preserving the intricate details of the scene. Here, the XC40’s 40mm fixed capabilities truly shone. I fell this is what this camera was build for. An all-encompassing lens to take in the immense grandeur.

Temperatures soared past 100 degrees during the day, turning the canyon rim into a furnace. Despite the extreme heat, the camera’s cooling system ensured consistent performance.

One evening, as clouds rolled in, I set up at the South Rim Desert View. Light from the setting sun streaked across the sky, illuminating the canyon in dramatic bursts of purples and yellows. Because of the high winds he camera’s ultra-fast shutter and high ISO performance allowed me to freeze those fleeting moments with stunning precision. What could have been a noisy, grain-filled image with lesser equipment was instead a masterpiece of light and detail.

During a sunset by Monument Creek Vista, I experimented with the XC40’s dynamic range of this 150 Mega Pixel sensor. This feature reduces noise in the shadows and enhances detail by allowing a straight capture of a scene with no post exposure manipulation. The result was an ethereal image of the foreground canyon bathed in golden light and shadow, while the canyon in the back was still lit by direct sunlight. One single image with detail in the highlights and dark shadows, all in-camera.

Day 15-20: Yosemite National Park – Granite Giants and Winter’s Touch

As we arrived in Yosemite, the weather turned. Heavy rain the first few days, then snowstorm blanketed the park in white, transforming its iconic granite cliffs into a winter wonderland. The freezing conditions pushed both man and machine to the limit. Night hikes through subzero temperatures were grueling, but the XC40 IQ4’s rugged and compact design handled it all without missing a beat.

At Valley View, as dusk broke over El Capitan and the valley, I captured one of the most breathtaking images of my career. The camera’s high-resolution sensor preserved every water droplet-covered branch, every wisp of mist rising from the valley. The scene’s grandeur was matched only by the XC40’s ability to translate it into a photograph that felt alive.

The camera’s intuitive touchscreen interface and live view made composing shots in harsh conditions remarkably straightforward. Even when my gloved fingers struggled to adjust settings, the XC40’s ergonomics and responsive controls ensured I didn’t miss a moment.
