I titled these photographs at the Maroon Bells “Elysium” which means “a place of ideal happiness.” I felt that description summed it up perfectly.
During this time of year, when Autumn color is at its peak, I’m regularly monitoring storm activity to see where I might capture my next photograph. Possibility of snow in Colorado? I’m there.
With a 15-hour drive ahead of me, I left immediately in hopes of beating the storm to Aspen. As I drove up Maroon Creek Road, the storm hit leaving a beautiful light dusting of snow. I sat with my camera on the edge of Maroon Lake and enjoyed watching the clouds overhead- waiting for the perfect moment to capture “Day 1 in Elysium.”
Sunrise was one of the most amazing scenes I have even seen. For hours I waited patiently for the clouded sky to clear. When the clouds finally parted, it was a gift from Mother Nature. The rising sun glanced the tips of the mountains, the wind in the valley stopped, and an incredible reflection formed across the lake. I took my photographs and then paused to take in the beauty of my surroundings, but only for a moment. The winds came rushing back through the valley, agitating the lake and erasing the mirror reflection.
